I’m behind on this. I know I know. But do you ever hear about a book everywhere you go and you’re just not into it? There’s no reason for it, but you just aren’t in the mood?
That was me with this book. Every time it was brought up to me, I was just like “eh, I’ll get to it at some point”. Well, my mom was gracious enough to take things into her own hands, and a few days ago I walked up to my front door to an amazon package containing the book. It was time.
The whole book is written in interview/documentary style and I was here for it. It was such a vibe and perfect for the 60’s/70’s rockstar setting. I read somewhere that the incredible Taylor Jenkins Reid loosely based her ideas off of Fleetwood Mac. Well, Daisy Jones and the Six stole my heart. Seriously. Even the more grating characters like Eddie I still sympathized with and wanted to succeed.
Everything about this book is perfect. Since the characters are telling a story about a time in their life, you already start prepping yourself for no “fairy tale ending”, but you still secretly hope that everyone gets their happy ending.
Although in literally no sense can I pretend I know the life of a rockstar, I would like to say that this tells an incredibly realistic and powerful imitation of what life would really be like for rockstars in the 70’s. From the fashion, to the temptations like drugs and sex, and the industry itself, Taylor Jenkins Reid really throws us into this world and I believed every word.
This books tells the story of a rock band called the Six, and an incredibly talented singer, Daisy Jones. The Six is mainly led by the egotistical, but very talented lead singer, Billy Dunne. Things quickly escalate once the two leads getting noticed, and join forces. As Daisy Jones and the Six, they are completely unstoppable. At least on the outside. As a group, they are struggling with friendships, sex, drugs, and control. None of them know where the boundaries and are all so close to going too far.
This book tugged at all my heartstrings, and by the end when everything started coming together, I didn’t want it to end, and was wishing I could see this glorious yet fictional group live.
If you ever feel like you want to escape your life a bit and live vicariously through a rockstar group that seems to have it all, this is the book for you.
